Recreation from Dakshinchitra Museum Archives

DakshinaChitra is a living-history museum in Tamil Nadu, dedicated to South Indian heritage and culture

When I visited this place few years back, there was a model of a weaver's house in Tamil Nadu along with a display of sarees woven in Tamil Nadu. I took images of few sarees just to understand different motifs woven across the state

The thought of recreation occurred recently. After discussions with the master weaver, we agreed to recreated this with no changes done to the original design and chose to stick to traditional adai technique to weave the motif

This particular saree had motifs resembling a dharmavaram saree

We recreated the same using adai method.

The Recreated Sari in tested zari - Mayilkazhuthu shade

This is another saree that was very unusual for a weave from Tamil Nadu The cyan shaded body, the skirt border in a contrasting maroon, the pencil korvai and the retta pettu border with pattani motifs and more importantly the birds placed alternate in a row as if they are sitting in a  string in the skirt border

The original sari had zari borders and plain pallu. We added the pattani border to the pallu and wove the sari entirely using thread

We had to count the number of birds sitting on the line to make sure the recreated version is closer to original.
